The Iron Man sequel was premiered in Malaysia on the 30th of April 2010, almost a week ahead of other countries. Tantamount to the first Iron Man movie, Iron Man 2 does not cease to surprise viewers with its breathtaking CGI. Trust me, you would never get tired watching Tony Stark talking and playing (yes, smashing down some Iron Man suit’s holographic blueprint with your hands and throwing it into another holographic basketball hoop IS considered playing) with Jarvis, the AI that powers everything in his house and amazingly, his suit.

The film starts where the previous film left off. After Tony revealed himself as Iron Man to the world, the publicity is overwhelming, with people questioning the safety of the United States in the hands of Iron Man. During a hearing in the movie, when Senator Stern asks Tony to turn over his Iron Man suit and its technologies to the ‘people of the United States’, Tony repudiated the request. Colonel Rhodes, a good friend of Tony’s, is then forced to read out a paragraph of his own report, where he knowingly wrote that Iron Man possesses a threat to the nation and her interests, but he then added that the country should consider including Tony in the chain of command. Ignoring the reaction of Senator Stern, Tony humorously said he will consider the post of Secretary of Defense, provided that the working hours are flexible.
The movie depicts Tony Stark as a playful, humorous and irresponsible man. Despite the promises he made to his country, he was shown partying in his suit at his residence with a lot of chicks. Rhodes, unable to bear with Tony any longer, stole the silver-coloured suit, a prototype of Tony’s current suit and fought Tony with it. The beams shot from both their palms’ arc reactors created a small explosion and both of them blacked out. The movie showed Rhodes leaving Tony’s residence and flying to the Air Force base. He then turned in the silver suit to the Air Force.
In overall, the movie revolves around the palladium in the arc reactor positioned on Tony’s chest, which is responsible for keeping his heart beating, starting to increase the level of toxic in his blood as a side-effect. The movie shows Tony checking his blood toxicity using a device once in a while, and the reading just keeps on increasing. However, Tony’s father, Howard Stark, founder of Stark Industries, saves the day when the town model he left Tony when he died, is ‘broken down’ by Tony into holographic images and moved around until a completely new element is created. The new element is the perfect substitute for palladium, without the side-effects, and gives more power compared to the old arc reactor. The new element is ‘inserted’ onto a triangle-shaped metal and hence the newly-designed triangular housing on the suit.
No movie is perfect without a final kiss scene. Pepper Potts, Tony’s personal assistance, is a workaholic. However, their relationship is a tad bit unusual. The pair care for each other, but their work relationship comes first. Pepper was appointed CEO of Stark Industries in the movie, and she can be seen working hard to get the company back on its feet. After the final fight scene where Tony works together with Rhodes who is wearing the weaponized silver suit, Tony and Pepper kissed on the roof a building they thought was vacant. Then Rhodes was found sitting there and he said something about ‘Get your own roof!’, very funny, really.
The movie is better than its predecessor, in my opinion. Definitely worth watching. Two thumbs and two toes up!
